Urinary incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine. This loss of urine can be due to weakness of the neck of the urinary bladder (stress urinary incontinence), overactivity if the muscle of the urinary bladder (detrusor instability or urge incontinence), damage to the spinal cord (neurogenic incontinence) or urinary obstruction (overflow incontinence).
Stress urinary incontinence is the commonest form of incontinence. The causes are :
- Trauma during pregnancy and delivery
- Menopause with loss of estrogen support
- Pelvic fractures
- Congenital defect in the pelvic bones or congenital weakness or deficiency of connective tissue
